Trainers
The first two trainers to be utilized by Horse & Julep will be Phil Schoenthal in the Mid-Atlantic, and John Ennis in Lexington, KY. Future purchases made on our behalf by Agent Phil Hager (see agents below) may utilize trainers he has had client placements with in the past, such as: Bill & Riley Mott, Christophe & Miguel Clement, Tom Bush, George Weaver, Jeremiah Englehart, Tom Amoss, and more. All of these trainers train and race at our target destinations (see Our Places page).
Phil Schoenthal
I've known Phil Schoenthal for nearly 8 years when I reached out to him after I saw he was the buyer on an inexpensive filly I really liked, who turned out to be a stakes filly for Phil. Phil is meticulous in his care of his equine athletes. His research and his program has garnered him great success from humble stock. One of them, filly Miss Behaviour, was a multiple graded stakes winner including the Grade 2 Matron Stakes at Belmont; she also finished second in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga. Phil is based at the beautiful Fair Hill Training Community in Elkton, Maryland. He ships from there to tracks throughout the Mid-Atlantic like Laurel, Pimlico, Belmont, Saratoga, Colonial, Monmouth, nearby Pennsylvania race courses, and more. Our owners will enjoy meeting Phil and seeing his operation. Phil who resides near Fair Hill with his wife Sarah and three children, serves on the Maryland Horsemen Board of Directors, is a veteran of the United States Air Force, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree. John Ennis
Not many young trainers can have a break out year with as much success as John Ennis has had, the way he has done it. In just a few short years, John has proven the ability to, through a sharp eye, and excellent horsemanship, identify attainable raw talent at the sales, then prepare those horses to be fast, early, productive athletes, and in some cases take a significant profits by monetizing his young horse talent through sale after they have demonstrated their early ability. Case in point; John sought out a tremendous physical yearling specimen from an unfashionable sire for $9,500. After the horse won it's first start last year at Churchill Downs for $79,000, he ran 2nd in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill. John sold the horse weeks later for $475,000 to new owners and he has set out to do it again annually with the same playbook. John is a native of Ireland, hailing from a top jockey school there, even riding races at Royal Ascot before making his way to America to eventually train on his own. He trains at the Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington, and from there races at Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Kentucky Downs, and surrounding states. John is married with 2 children. We look forward to visiting John's operation while seeing the best of the bluegrass. Agents
When his services are available, we prefer to utilize the talent of a fantastic agent like Phil Hager of Lexington, KY. In a few short years, Phil has been identified as an extremely reliable judge of future talent in a young horse and for the ability to find great value for his clients for the dollars invested. In fact, Phil has purchased no fewer than 4 Grade 1 performers in his young career at auction prices of $75k, $70k, $65k, and $24k. Phil's purchases have included dozens of stakes winners. Phil has spent seasons working under many astute horsemen like Hall of Fame and 2019 Kentucky Derby winning Trainer Bill Mott and Agent David Ingordo, also associated with numerous champions. Horse & Julep is also engaging many opportunities to collaborate with other owners, groups, or partnerships, creating new venues to join on horses we may not have been able to get on our own. These opportunities can come in many forms, and may involve different agents, trainers, owners, groups, farms or training facilities, all vetted by Horse & Julep and mutually agreed upon by managing parties.
